Erik Alkema- Waterwolves and Might be Giants
Op de dag van inhuldiging van Beatrix als koningin der Nederlanden, bijna dertig jaar geleden, speelde zich in de omgeving van het toen nog in aanbouw zijnde metrostation Waterlooplein, een gewelddadige confrontatie tussen de kraakbeweging en de politie af. De Slag om de Blauwbrug was de grootste veldslag in de recente geschiedenis van Amsterdam.
30 April 1980 was niet alleen de dag dat de vijfjarige Erik Alkema besloot om koningin te worden, hij raakte dankzij beelden van de veldslag ook bekend met de term 'kraker'. Een woord dat, door de manier waarop het werd gecommuniceerd, voor hem een negatieve en onheilspellende lading kreeg.
Op televisie zag Erik vervaarlijke, geuniformde en gehelmde mannen die met knuppels en schilden vochten tegen normaal ogende mensen. Logische gevolgtrekking: die enge, bijna onmenselijke vechtrobots moésten wel die vermaledijde krakers zijn.
Deze kinderlijke misinterpretatie van de krakersrellen vormt het uitgangspunt van de uit negen enorme fleece-sculpturen bestaande installatie Waterwolves and Might be Giants.
De installatie is, na de documentaire The Impossible Marriage, de tweede in een serie reflecties op Nederland en de huidige tijdsgeest.
Met zijn werk poogt Erik Alkema een scherper zicht te krijgen op de, in zijn ogen, vaak door woorden gemanipuleerde en vergiftigde , vertelde werkelijkheid.
'Ik wil mensen bij de ogen nemen, om ze daaraan door de blinde vlekken te slepen in het door taal gegijzelde en vertroebelde blikveld.'
* Het ligt in de bedoeling de film (Een documentaire of huwelijksmigratie in samenwerking met El despacho), in premiere te laten gaan voor de Tweede kamer verkiezingen in juni.
Deze expositie is mede mogelijk gemaakt dankzij steun van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Gemeente Amsterdam stadsdeel Centrum en het GVB.

On the day of the coronation of Beatrix as queen of the Netherlands, almost thirty years ago, the area arround metro-station Waterlooplein, which at that moment was still under construction, was the stage of an gigantic violent confrontation between the squatting movement and the police. This 'Slag om de Blauwbrug' was the biggest battle in recent Amsterdam history.
the 30th of April 1980 was not only the day that the five year old Erik Alkema decided to become queen of the Netherlands, thanks to the images on television of the riots, he also got acquainted with the word 'squatter'. A word that, because of the way how it was communicated , sounded very negative and scary to him.
On television Erik saw dangerous looking uniformed helmeted men who fought with batons and shields against people who in his eyes looked quite normal.
Logical conclusion: This scary inhuman fighting robots were the bad guys called squatters.
This childish misinterpretation of the squatters riots is the starting-point of the nine fleece sculptures-installation titled Waterwolves and Might be Giants.
This installation is after the documentary The Impossible Marriage*, the second in a series of reflections on the Netherlands and the contemporary zeitgeist.
'I wanna take people by their eyes and drag them trough the blind spots in their range of vision which is polluted and taken hostage by language'
* The aim is to premiere the film (A collaboration between Erik Alkema and el Despacho) before the upcoming Dutch parliamentary elections (June 2010)
